Monks & Monasteries

Monasteries in Myanmar are fascinating places to visit. Some of the monasteries, especially the old teakwood structures, are very striking. Shwe Yan Pay Kyaung, in the Shan State town of Nyaungshwe (near Inle Lake), is one such monastery: the century-old teakwood building has huge oval windows from which novice monks peek out. At almost any monastery in the country you are guaranteed to meet monks who are eager to strike up a conversation. Return their hospitality by bringing them gifts such as fresh fruit, books, pens, or other handy items.
